COVID-19 exposed Africa’s challenges in accessing vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics. In response, Africa launched the New Public Health Order for Africa framework in 2021 aiming to strengthen health systems and research, development, manufacturing (RDM) capabilities. However, Africa still lags in producing medical countermeasures aligned with its health needs, disease burden and priorities. A robust and coordinated RDM architecture is crucial for combating health threats and ensuring access to safe medical products. This side event seeks to promote R&D frameworks supporting local manufacturing whilst highlighting coordination, sustainable financing and knowledge sharing as markers of success.
