Dr Adamu Isah

Director, Medical and Health Services, African Union

Dr Adamu Isah currently serves as the Director for Medical and Health Services at the Africa Union, based in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. In this capacity among other things, Dr Isah provides health coverage through various mechanisms to all AU staff and dependents at the headquarters and members of the diplomatic corps based in Addis Ababa as well as all organs, agencies and missions of the AU located out of Addis Ababa. 

Dr Isah has been practicing public health for over 20 years. In the last 15 years Dr Isah worked with various NGO’s to implement development and humanitarian projects in Nigeria, mostly focusing maternal and child health areas. Dr Isah started out as Clinical Advisor, then rose through the ranks to become a Deputy Country Director in charge of Programs, Chief of Party, Field Manager. 

On the development programs, Dr Isah implemented reproductive/maternal health programs such as prevention and treatment of birth related injuries (obstetric fistula, incontinence, pelvic organs prolapse), basic and emergency obstetric care, early marriage, family planning, sexual and gender-based violence. Others include prevention and treatment of childhood pneumonia, immunization, nutrition, integrated management of childhood illnesses, community engagement, advocacy and policy development, coalition building and networking, research, etc.

Humanitarian programs that Dr Isah implemented include response to COVID 19 in Lagos and Jigawa States of Nigeria including increasing access to medical Oxygen in over 60 primary health care facilities in Nigeria. He also responded to outbreaks of meningitis and cholera regularly, responded to natural disasters such as flooding.

Through networking with the “Every Breath Counts Coalition”, Dr Isah played key role in the development of the first ever Integrated National Pneumonia Control Strategy and implementation plan in Nigeria.

Dr Isah served as Head of Department of Community Medicine in a federal university in Nigeria and as Director, University Health Services in another.

Dr Isah is a member of various professional bodies, networks and coalitions.
