Mustaqeem De Gama holds a doctoral degree and was appointed as a professor of international trade law at the University of Stellenbosh (2008-2009) and an extra-ordinary professor at the University of Pretoria (2010-2015). He was appointed as Counsellor with the South African Mission in Geneva and accredited to the WTO and UN between 2015 - 2020. He previously worked at the Department of Trade and Industry in South Africa and headed the Legal International Trade and Investment Directorate. The Legal Directorate advised on investment, intellectual property and trade policy and all trade and investment disputes. Mustaqeem was also previously the South African representative to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) for Arbitration and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). He was instrumental in passing the June 2022 WTO TRIPS Decision on Vaccines in respect of COVID-19 and co-chaired the ACT-A Working Group on access to Therapeutics and Diagnostics. He joined the Afrigen team in January 2023.
